Long Form
September 28, 2024
As we head into next week’s election, we are bombarded with texts, sound bites, and 30 second ads.
You learn very little about anything in that mode of communication.
I am intrigued by “long form” podcasts. These are conversations between a small number of people that last a long time & deeply cover a wide range of topics. You can learn listening to this type of in-depth conversation.
I know Trump sat down with Joe Rogan for a long form conversation. I have not listened to their conversation but am a regular podcast listener.
My prediction is the next election cycle will incorporate more of this type of interaction. You can learn a lot about a person over the course of a long conversation & it would be tough to pretend for that long of a time period. This allows the interviewee to fully explain their position on various issues, most of which involve quite a bit of nuance.
As a listener, these types of interviews are unbelievable learning tools. For example, regular readers will know I am a fan of autonomous vehicles. I found and listened to a conversation with the co-CEO of Waymo (here). This was such an interesting conversation & it is easy to forget this type of thing was not available until very recently.
Like most social media content, used wisely, it can be a tool for learning and growth (used foolishly, social media is an enormous waste).
